Elon Musk’s AI venture, xAI, is preparing to introduce its first standalone consumer-facing product: a chatbot app, according to the Wall Street Journal. This app, designed to operate similarly to OpenAI’s ChatGPT, will provide users direct access to Grok, xAI’s proprietary AI, through their personal devices.

The app will enter a competitive market, vying against established players like OpenAI, Google, and Anthropic, which already offer consumer AI tools. Currently, Grok is available only to premium subscribers on X (formerly Twitter), but the new app may make the AI accessible to a broader audience, possibly for free. A limited version of Grok is already being tested in select regions, with users having restricted query access.

xAI’s consumer app could launch as early as December, challenging the dominance of current AI platforms. The app will leverage advanced large language models (LLMs), supported by exclusive data from Musk’s other ventures, including Tesla and X. xAI’s supercomputer in Memphis, Tennessee, equipped with 100,000 Nvidia GPUs, powers these LLMs, and Musk plans to double the computing capacity.

The app’s release is tied to xAI’s ongoing funding round, which could raise up to $5 billion, boosting the company’s valuation to $50 billion. Backed by major investors like Fidelity and Larry Ellison, xAI is on track to surpass $100 million in annual revenue, largely driven by partnerships with Musk’s other ventures such as Starlink and X.
