WhatsApp Search Feature Update: New Tool to Combat Fake Images and Enhance User Safety

Tech

WhatsApp is developing a new feature aimed at protecting users from deceptive or altered images shared with them. This WhatsApp search feature update will allow users to search for images on the web, helping them to identify potentially misleading visuals, as reported by WABetaInfo. For example, if a user receives an image that appears to be manipulated or taken out of context, they will be able to use this WhatsApp search feature update to find similar images or the original version online to verify its authenticity. Currently under development, this WhatsApp search feature update will be included in a future update of Meta’s instant messaging app.

A beta version is already available for users of WhatsApp beta for Android with the 2.24.21.31 update, which can be downloaded from the Google Play Store. According to WABetaInfo, when users perform an image search, the image will be uploaded to Google for the search without being shared with WhatsApp. This ensures that the app does not store or process the image or its caption. Additionally, users will have the capability to verify the legitimacy of images shared in conversations, whether they come from news articles, social media posts, or memes, which could be manipulated to spread misinformation. Importantly, the image search feature will be applicable to all images, regardless of how they were shared or how frequently they have been forwarded. This means users can seek more information about any image they receive, whether sent by a close contact or forwarded from elsewhere. However, the ability to search links will be limited to frequently forwarded messages. Users will maintain full control over initiating a search, ensuring that no data is shared without their explicit consent.
