The United States has expressed apprehension over Pakistan’s development of long-range ballistic missiles, which could potentially extend their reach beyond South Asia to American territories. Deputy National Security Adviser Jon Finer labeled these advancements as an “emerging threat” to U.S. security.

U.S. Sanctions Target Pakistani Entities

In response, the U.S. has imposed sanctions on Pakistan‘s National Development Complex (NDC) and three Karachi-based companies: Affiliates International, Akhtar and Sons Private Limited, and Rockside Enterprise. These measures aim to impede Pakistan’s procurement of components and testing equipment for its nuclear-capable Shaheen series missiles.

Pakistan Deems Sanctions ‘Unfortunate and Biased’

Pakistan’s Foreign Office has criticized the sanctions as “unfortunate and biased,” asserting that the country’s strategic capabilities are intended solely for defense and regional stability. They warn that such U.S. policies could disrupt strategic balance in South Asia.

Implications for Regional and Global Security

Analysts suggest that Pakistan’s missile program is primarily designed to counter perceived threats from neighboring India. However, the U.S. views the expansion of these capabilities as a potential risk to its own security, further straining diplomatic relations between Washington and Islamabad.
