UK Experiences First Snow of the Season, Schools Close

Europe

The UK has faced its first snowfall of the season, causing travel disruptions and school closures. Parts of the country, including Northern Ireland, northern Scotland, northern England, the Midlands, and northeast Wales, have been issued yellow warnings for snow and ice.

In Wales, around 130 schools in Powys, Wrexham, and Flintshire were shut down, while about 50 schools in the West Midlands were also affected. Northern Rail services in some areas could be delayed until at least 14:00 GMT due to weather disruptions.

some areas received up to 12cm (5 inches) of snow, particularly in Nottingham, and temperatures in northern Scotland dropped as low as -7.8°C in Tulloch Bridge. Snowfall and icy conditions have led to warnings of hazardous driving conditions, with freezing temperatures expected overnight.

The UK Health Security Agency issued an amber cold weather alert for several regions, stressing the increased health risks for vulnerable individuals, particularly the elderly. Temperatures are forecast to drop below freezing in many parts of the UK in the coming days, with colder conditions likely to continue through the weekend.

With milder weather expected by the weekend, the risk of snow will decrease, but there remains the possibility of further wintry showers before conditions thaw.
