The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) has released its weather forecast for October, predicting a blend of warmer-than-usual temperatures and near-normal rainfall across the country. These conditions are expected to trigger concerns over air quality and public health, especially in urban areas.

While most regions will experience above-average temperatures, areas like Gilgit-Baltistan, Kashmir, and parts of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa are set to see slightly lower-than-usual rainfall. These higher temperatures will be particularly noticeable in the mountainous regions of Gilgit-Baltistan and the western parts of Balochistan.

The combination of heat and humidity raises concerns about the proliferation of dengue fever, with the warm conditions fostering the growth of dengue larvae in vulnerable areas. Additionally, the risk of Glacial Lake Outburst Floods (GLOFs) will be heightened in mountainous regions, posing a threat to communities living in the vicinity.

PMD also warns of possible scattered showers, including hail and windstorms, which could impact the ongoing Kharif crop harvest. While the rain may offer some relief, it could also disrupt the agricultural cycle. Urban areas, in particular, may face increased levels of smog as the combination of rainfall and warmer temperatures worsens air quality.

On a more positive note, the forecasted rainfall could provide crucial moisture for crops and vegetables, supporting their growth and ensuring stable yields through October. As the weather pattern unfolds, Pakistanis can expect a mix of challenges and opportunities for agriculture, health, and air quality management throughout the month.
