René Magritte’s L’empire des lumières sold for over $121 million at Christie’s in New York, breaking the auction record for the Surrealist artist. Estimated at $95 million, the 1954 painting captivated buyers with its juxtaposition of daylight and nighttime.

The work, part of the late interior designer Mica Ertegun’s collection, is celebrated for its scale, condition, and subtle surrealist details. Two additional Magritte pieces, La cour d’amour and La Mémoire, sold for $10.53 million and $3.68 million, respectively.

The sale brought a bright spot to an art market facing economic uncertainty, with Christie’s noting steady demand for iconic works despite a slowdown in global sales.
