Katy Perry Wins Trademark Case in Australia

Europe

Singer Katy Perry has won a trademark dispute in Australia, allowing her to continue using her name. The court reversed a 2023 decision that sided with Australian designer Katie Taylor, who had registered the name “Katie Perry” for her clothing line.

The judges ruled that Perry had been using the name as a trademark five years before Taylor launched her brand, noting that by then, Perry had already gained international fame. The court also canceled Taylor’s trademark registration.

Taylor, who likened the case to “David vs. Goliath,” expressed her disappointment after the ruling. The judges acknowledged the challenges both women faced, as neither was aware of the other’s business at the time of filing their trademarks.

This ruling comes ahead of Perry’s upcoming 2025 world tour for her album 143.
