Israeli Football Fans Attacked in Amsterdam, Riot Police Intervene Amid Rising Violence

World

In a shocking series of antisemitic attacks, Israeli football fans were violently targeted in the heart of Amsterdam, prompting swift intervention from riot police to protect them. The supporters, who had traveled to the Dutch capital for a Europa League match between Maccabi Tel Aviv and Ajax, faced brutal assaults across the city, leading to multiple injuries.

The violence escalated after clashes between Maccabi Tel Aviv fans and pro-Palestinian protesters earlier in the day. Despite a heavy police presence, Israeli fans were assaulted in various locations, and five individuals were hospitalized. Amsterdam authorities confirmed 62 arrests, with an ongoing investigation into the violent incidents, although police remained unclear on the identities of the perpetrators.

Dutch Prime Minister Dick Schoof condemned the antisemitic nature of the attacks, calling them “horrific” and vowing that the perpetrators would be brought to justice. Israeli President Isaac Herzog described the attacks as a “pogrom” against Israelis, and Dutch officials faced growing pressure over their handling of the situation.

The attacks occurred two days before the anniversary of the 1938 Nazi pogrom against Jews, drawing comparisons from officials like U.S. Special Envoy on Antisemitism Deborah Lipstadt, who called the events “terribly reminiscent of a classic pogrom.” The violence has sparked outrage, with calls for accountability and stronger measures to protect citizens and prevent further escalation.
