The Israeli cabinet is set to meet to deliberate on a proposed ceasefire with Hezbollah to halt ongoing hostilities in Lebanon. The agreement, brokered with U.S. and French mediation, suggests a 60-day truce, including the withdrawal of Israeli forces and the deployment of Lebanese Army troops south of the Litani River to replace Hezbollah fighters.

Despite progress in negotiations, heavy fighting persists, with Lebanese authorities reporting over 31 fatalities from Israeli airstrikes and continued rocket attacks from Hezbollah. The deal, if approved, would remove the Israeli-occupied buffer zone in southern Lebanon, establish a monitoring committee led by the U.S., and give Israel the right to act if the agreement is violated.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has reportedly agreed in principle, though far-right factions within the government oppose the truce. Diplomatic efforts continue, with both sides urged to seize the opportunity for peace.

Meanwhile, Lebanon’s authorities emphasize adherence to UN Security Council Resolution 1701, which includes the withdrawal of Hezbollah forces and arms from southern Lebanon, though both nations accuse each other of violations. As talks progress, Gaza‘s parallel conflict remains unresolved, highlighting the region’s broader instability.
