Iran Warns It’s “Ready for War” but Offers Talks as Trump Weighs Military Response to Protest Crackdown

Iran’s Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi has issued a stark warning to the United States that Tehran is prepared for war if Washington chooses a military path, even as he calls for dialogue with US leaders amid growing tensions over the violent crackdown on nationwide protests.

Araghchi stressed that while communication channels with the US remain open, Iran is “prepared for all options” and has significantly bolstered its military readiness compared with last year’s conflicts. He urged the US to choose the “wise option” of dialogue rather than confrontation.

The comments come after US President Donald Trump said he was considering “strong options” in response to Tehran’s harsh response to antigovernment rallies. These protests, originally sparked by economic hardship, have swelled into broader demands for change and have been met with deadly force.

Trump — who has warned of possible military action and other measures including tariffs — indicated that talks on Iran’s nuclear program were being arranged, but also hinted he “may have to act” before negotiations occur.

Araghchi repeated Iran’s readiness for conflict if tested militarily, but emphasized his hope that the US will opt for diplomacy. He also accused some forces of attempting to drag the US into war to serve the interests of Israel.

Meanwhile, protests across Iran continue amid an internet blackout, with casualty figures varying widely. Iranian authorities claim “terrorist elements” are responsible for much of the violence, while opposition groups estimate a significantly higher death toll than official state reports.

Despite rising tension, Tehran has signaled it is willing to continue communications with US Special Envoy Steve Witkoff, though Araghchi described Washington’s public threats as “incompatible” with meaningful negotiations.

In response to the turmoil, Iran’s Parliament Speaker has warned that US and Israeli forces would be legitimate targets if Washington acts on its intervention rhetoric — a statement that intensifies the risk of escalation.

As Trump’s administration weighs its options — from sanctions and diplomatic pressure to potential military action — the world watches closely, with both sides signaling readiness for either war or dialogue.
