Former South Korean Minister Linked to Martial Law Controversy Attempts Suicide

World

Former South Korean Minister Kim Yong-hyun, who claimed full responsibility for President Yoon’s failed attempt to impose martial law last week, has reportedly attempted to take his own life, an official confirmed.

Authorities discovered the Former South Korean Minister linked to the martial law controversy making an attempt at his detention center on Tuesday night, according to Shin Yong-hae, chief of the Justice Ministry’s correctional agency, who informed lawmakers of the incident.

Following the shock martial law order issued by President Yoon, Kim resigned last week alongside other senior presidential staff. He was detained on Sunday for investigation before being formally arrested on insurrection charges.

Shin confirmed that Kim is in stable condition after the suicide attempt. The Former South Korean Minister linked to the martial law declaration is one of several officials currently under investigation for their roles in the president’s short-lived and highly controversial decision, which has sparked widespread outrage across South Korea.

Tens of thousands of citizens have taken to the streets, demanding President Yoon’s resignation or impeachment. While Yoon is also under investigation for alleged insurrection and has apologized for the martial law declaration, he has so far resisted mounting pressure to step down.

Kim, who was appointed defense minister in September, issued a statement on Tuesday, apologizing “deeply” for his actions and taking full responsibility. “All responsibility for this situation lies solely with me,” said the Former South Korean Minister linked to the scandal.

This incident continues to fuel nationwide protests and growing demands for accountability from South Korea’s leadership.
