On Saturday, October 5th, 2024, the Charity Commission issued an Official Warning to the National Council for Christian Standards in Society (NCCSS), citing failure to follow critical regulatory advice. The NCCSS, established in 1986 with a mission to promote religious education, has been under scrutiny due to its close ties with Christian Voice, a non-charitable organization involved in political lobbying.

The Commission had previously advised the NCCSS to delineate its charitable activities from those of Christian Voice, recommending the creation of a separate entity for non-charitable work. Additionally, the trustees were urged to remove Christian Voice as a working name from the official charity register and revise their charitable purposes, which were deemed vague and not fully aligned with charitable law.

Despite these warnings, the NCCSS did not make the required changes, prompting the Charity Commission to escalate the matter with an Official Warning. Tracy Howarth, Assistant Director for Casework at the Charity Commission, emphasized that trustees must ensure their actions align with their charitable purposes and that failure to comply could lead to further sanctions.

The warning, issued on September 30th, 2024, serves as a reminder to all charity trustees about the importance of adhering to regulatory guidelines, as non-compliance can result in serious consequences.
