This incident has left many questioning the accountability of Anwyl Homes, the estate developer, and Greenbelt, the company responsible for ground maintenance. Despite paying regular fees to Greenbelt, residents report that the brook had been blocked with debris for months, a recurring issue that had allegedly been brought to the attention of both entities.
Matty Williams and his partner, Bethan Dixon, were among the many affected when Oakenholt Homes Flooded. “I opened the back door, and water was millimeters away from entering,” said Matty. “The brook overflowed, and within minutes, water was gushing into the neighborhood.” Despite quick action by residents and the fire service—who worked tirelessly for nearly 24 hours—the damage was extensive. Residents from Flint even brought makeshift sandbags to assist.
“It’s infuriating,” Matty added. “This could have been avoided if the brook had been cleared. Oakenholt Homes Flooded, and now we’re left cleaning up an entirely preventable disaster. It’s even more frustrating when Greenbelt and Anwyl pass the blame to each other.”
Charlotte Howarth, another resident whose family was impacted, described the terrifying experience. “When Oakenholt Homes Flooded, we had to rip up our floorboards and dig trenches in our garden. One of my children, who is autistic, was traumatized. Thankfully, the firefighters were amazing, reassuring him and working beyond their call of duty.”
Charlotte also highlighted how debris, such as wooden roof joists and overgrowth in the brook, caused the blockage, emphasizing that Greenbelt had failed to clear it. “Despite Greenbelt’s denial, the flooding occurred in an area they are responsible for, outside properties at 15–21 Ffordd Dewi. They cannot change the evidence or undo the damage.”
A spokesperson for Anwyl Homes commented, “We sympathize with all homeowners affected by the flooding in Oakenholt and will assist the relevant authorities with their investigations.” Greenbelt, however, maintains that water was flowing freely during their maintenance in November and attributes the issue to a culvert under the roads, which is managed by Flintshire County Council.
