North Korean leader Kim Jong Un has sent birthday wishes to Russian President Vladimir Putin, referring to him as his “closest comrade” in a message commemorating Putin’s 72nd birthday. Kim expressed confidence that relations between their nations would reach new heights.
Ties between North Korea and Russia have grown significantly, especially since the onset of the Ukraine war, raising concerns in Western countries. On Tuesday, Kim also vowed to accelerate North Korea’s efforts to become a military superpower with nuclear capabilities.
According to Yonhap News, citing North Korean state media KCNA, Kim praised the strengthening of ties since Putin’s visit to Pyongyang in June, describing the relationship as “invincible and eternal.” He expressed optimism that their continued interactions would fortify the DPRK-Russia friendship.
Earlier this year, both leaders signed an agreement promising mutual support in case of “aggression” against either country, though the exact definition of aggression remains unclear. Kim has been accused of aiding Russia in the Ukraine war by supplying weapons in exchange for economic and technological support. There is growing evidence that North Korean missiles are being used by Russia in Ukraine.
Experts like Jeffrey Lewis from the James Martin Center for Nonproliferation Studies believe both nations are seeking to ease the impact of international sanctions by building alliances outside the influence of U.S. sanctions.
During Kim’s visit to Russia in September 2023, Putin pledged assistance in developing North Korea’s satellites, following several failed launches by Pyongyang. Meanwhile, South Korea has detected signs that North Korea may be in the early stages of constructing a nuclear-powered submarine, though further confirmation is needed.
