Dubai emerged in 2024 as the world’s second gastronomy capital, following iconic destinations such as Paris, London, New York, and Tokyo. In this prestigious ranking, Dubai surpassed cities like Paris and Singapore in various food experiences, highlighting its rapidly growing culinary scene.

According to the third annual report on the gastronomy industry in Dubai, published by the Dubai Economic and Tourism Authority (DET), the city’s food and beverage (F&B) sector experienced an exceptional growth year. This growth resulted in the issuance of nearly 1,200 new restaurant licenses to operators across various categories and cuisines. Dubai’s unique culinary scene continues to reflect the city’s rich multicultural identity, offering eclectic tastes for both residents and visitors alike.

The F&B sector plays a vital role in Dubai’s economic diversification efforts. The growth in new restaurant openings underscores Dubai’s commitment to expanding its culinary offerings. This growth aligns with the ambitious goals set by the Dubai Economic Agenda D33, aiming to double the size of the Dubai economy by 2033 and further solidify the city’s position as a global economic and leisure hub.

Gastronomy has become a crucial element of this strategy, contributing to Dubai’s economic diversification and enhancing its appeal as a premier destination for food lovers and industrial investors alike.

Dubai’s gastronomy sector is an integral part of the emirate’s tourism strategy and broader vision. Its ongoing growth is a testament to our visionary leadership and the objectives outlined in the D33 Agenda, which aims to make Dubai the world’s best city to visit, live, work, and invest in. The findings from the Dubai Gastronomy Industry Report 2024 further reinforce the city’s position as a global culinary hub, highlighting the diverse nature of Dubai’s food offerings, which draw from the cultures and cuisines of nearly 200 nationalities,” said Ahmed Al Khaja, CEO of Dubai Festivals and Retail Establishment (DFRE).

The F&B sector also plays a key role in boosting tourism revenue. Strategic partnerships and collaborations have been instrumental in Dubai’s rise as a global destination. One of the significant highlights was the Summer Restaurant Week in 2024, featuring over 60 of the best restaurants in the city.

Dubai’s gastronomy scene continues to develop, with its growth reflected in the success of the tourism and economic sectors. The Emirate welcomed 18.72 million international visitors in 2024, marking a 9% increase compared to the previous year. The impact of the F&B sector extends beyond dining, acting as a critical economic multiplier by generating tourism revenue, creating job opportunities, and strengthening local supply chains. In the first nine months of 2024, Dubai’s total GDP growth rose by 3.7%, contributing 3.4% to the total GDP of the Emirate during the reporting period.

“Looking ahead, we remain committed to further strengthening Dubai’s position as a world-class gastronomy hub. We will continue to collaborate with key stakeholders and partners, including small and medium enterprises and homegrown talent, to shape Dubai’s gastronomy landscape and ensure they are supported in their endeavors,” added Al Khaja.

Social media has become a key tool in promoting Dubai’s culinary offerings. According to DET data, 70% of UAE visitors choose a restaurant after consulting social media, making an online presence essential for restaurants in the city. With thousands of dining establishments, the culinary excellence of Dubai’s restaurant sector has gained global recognition. The third edition of the Michelin Guide Dubai in July 2024 featured 106 restaurants across 35 cuisines. Notably, 16 new restaurants received two stars, 14 received one star, 3 earned green stars, and 18 were named Bib Gourmands, further elevating Dubai’s status as a global gastronomy destination.
