UK’s First Electric HGV Charging Hub Opens in North Lincolnshire
The UK’s First Electric HGV charging hub has officially opened in North Lincolnshire, marking a significant step toward sustainable transport. The public charging station for lorries, installed at Able Humber Port in Immingham, features eight charging bays specifically designed for heavy goods vehicles (HGVs).
Developed by Milence—a joint venture between Daimler Truck, Traton Group, and Volvo Group—the UK’s First Electric HGV hub is strategically located off the A180, providing direct access to the motorway network. The project received planning approval from North Lincolnshire Council in June 2023.
Equipped with advanced technology, the UK’s First Electric HGV hub includes four high-performance charging systems supporting eight bays, alongside a megawatt charger capable of powering two additional bays. According to the Local Democracy Reporting Service, the system can fully charge an electric lorry in approximately 90 minutes.
Milence aims to expand electric route corridors for HGVs across Europe, with the UK’s First Electric HGV hub playing a key role. Planned routes include one between Immingham and Birmingham and another linking Liverpool to Northampton, further supporting the transition to sustainable freight transport.
Milence CEO Anja van Niersen emphasized the importance of the UK’s First Electric HGV hub, stating: “This strategically located site underscores our commitment to providing reliable and accessible charging infrastructure for the growing number of electric truck operators. This is just the first step in our UK expansion, and we are dedicated to accelerating the shift toward a sustainable transport industry.”
North East Lincolnshire Council leader Philip Jackson praised the UK’s First Electric HGV hub, highlighting its significance in northern Lincolnshire’s technological advancements. He noted its proximity to Immingham, the country’s largest port by volume, making it an ideal location for sustainable transport innovation.
North Lincolnshire Council deputy leader Richard Hannigan described the UK’s First Electric HGV hub as “a wonderful innovation” and “groundbreaking” for the region. The project represents a major leap forward in the push for greener logistics and a more sustainable future for heavy transport.
