Storm Bert Wreaks Havoc Across Ireland

Europe

Storm Bert has caused widespread travel chaos in Northern Ireland, with rail lines and roads heavily impacted by strong winds and heavy rain. The Belfast to Antrim rail line is closed, while the Belfast to Dublin route has reopened after earlier disruptions, Translink confirmed.

Numerous roads are blocked by fallen debris, and drivers face hazardous conditions. A gritter vehicle became stranded on Coleraine Mountain Road, which was closed briefly on Saturday morning.

Severe weather has caused additional problems: a roof was blown off a shed in Dungiven, flooding closed the Broadway roundabout near the Royal Victoria Hospital, and a tree fell across the Belfast Road in Newtownards. The Hillhall Road in Lisburn is also shut due to flooding, and the Ulsterbus service from Belfast to Newcastle was canceled.

In the Republic of Ireland, around 60,000 homes are without power, and Met Éireann issued red warnings for heavy rain in western regions, causing severe flooding and dangerous driving conditions.

Storm Bert, the second named storm of the 2024/25 season, continues to cause disruption across both Northern Ireland and the Republic.
