TEHRAN: The return of Donald Trump to the U.S. presidency will not alter Iran’s relations with China, stated Ali Akbar Velayati, advisor to Iran’s supreme leader, as reported by ISNA news agency.

Velayati emphasized that Trump’s re-election would not influence Iran’s foreign policy, particularly its ties with China. “Iran and China share deep-rooted cultural and historical bonds, resulting in mutual positive impacts,” he said during a meeting with Chinese Ambassador Cong Peiwu.

As Iran’s top trading partner and major oil buyer, China maintains crucial economic ties with Tehran. Iranian Oil Minister Mohsen Paknejad recently expressed confidence, noting no “serious concerns” about oil sales following Trump’s election.

Trump’s previous term was marked by the “maximum pressure” policy, involving harsh sanctions on Iran that impacted China’s cooperation under the Belt and Road Initiative. Despite this, in 2021, Iran and China signed a 25-year strategic partnership covering energy, infrastructure, and security sectors.

Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi, in a September meeting, reassured President Masoud Pezeshkian of China’s unwavering support for Iran amidst global shifts.
