Punjab Extends School Closures Due to Rising Smog

Pakistan

In response to a severe increase in air pollution, the Punjab government has expanded the closure of schools and colleges to five additional divisions. The decision, announced by the Environmental Protection Department, affects educational institutions in Sargodha, Rawalpindi, Dera Ghazi Khan, Bahawalpur, and Sahiwal divisions, which will remain closed from November 13 to 17.

Previously, similar closures were imposed in Gujranwala, Lahore, Multan, and Faisalabad due to the worsening smog conditions. The closure applies to all schools from nursery to grade 12, including academies and tuition centers. Authorities are hoping to mitigate the significant health risks posed by the severe environmental pollution.

In Lahore, outdoor activities have also been suspended until November 17, with all sports events, exhibitions, and outdoor dining at restaurants halted. The district administration has exempted religious gatherings from these restrictions. Shops, markets, and malls are instructed to close by 8 PM, but essential services such as medical stores and grocery shops remain unaffected.

Additionally, the Parks and Horticulture Authority (PHA) has been actively washing trees and plants along key roads and green spaces in an effort to reduce pollution levels.

Local officials urge the public to limit outdoor exposure and use masks to safeguard health during this challenging environmental crisis
