Sherfane Rutherford played a breathtaking knock while Gudakesh Motie delivered a match-winning spin performance as West Indies beat England by 30 runs in their T20 World Cup Group C clash at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai.
Rutherford smashed an unbeaten 76 off just 42 balls, hammering seven massive sixes to power West Indies to a commanding total of 196 for 6. His aggressive innings laid the foundation for a dominant team performance on Wednesday night.
After an early setback that saw both openers dismissed within the first seven balls, Shimron Hetmyer and Roston Chase rebuilt the innings with a steady partnership. Rutherford then joined Jason Holder, and together they added 61 runs, with Holder contributing a quick-fire 33 off 17 balls.
England’s leg-spinner Adil Rashid was the standout bowler, conceding only 16 runs in his four overs while picking up two key wickets.
In response, England started strongly before losing Phil Salt early. Jos Buttler and Harry Brook attempted to stabilize the innings, but West Indies’ spinners tightened their grip. Gudakesh Motie struck crucial blows, finishing with figures of 3 for 33, while Roston Chase chipped in with vital wickets.
England slumped to 93 for 4 at the halfway stage and struggled to regain momentum. Despite Sam Curran’s fighting 43 not out, England were bowled out for 166 in 19 overs, suffering their first defeat of the tournament.
The victory secured West Indies their second consecutive win, propelling them to the top of Group C, while England slipped to third place behind Scotland.
Rutherford credited his performance to preparation and mental clarity, expressing satisfaction with both his batting and the team’s bowling effort.
